Easter Show 2010

We have made our pilgrimage to the Royal Easter Agricultural Show here in Sydney and spent most of the morning watching the animals. We managed to find healthy food for lunch and lots of samples in the Food Hall. A few showbags later and we headed home for tea. We saw the tallest horse- Noddy- and fell in love with piglets, lambs, alpacas and cattle dog pups. On my list of animals I need to get to know are: chickens, Jersey cows and alpacas (their wool is silky and light.)

Old friends

Last week we had tea with some old Singapore friends. My son and her daughter were at playgroup together from the age of 2- 4 years. Now they are at neighboring schools, both in Form 1. We sat around the kitchen table, eating Portuguese tarts and drinking cups of tea, happily reminiscing.

I am hoping that I'll have a place in Pet Heaven once I have left this planet- yet again we have opened our home up to another orphan animal- this time a Russian Blue cat who needed a place to chill for a while. She has captured the heart of my husband and therefore has just about sealed her fate. Our other cats have continued to give her the cold shoulder as only cats can and have moved out of the kitchen and onto the front verandah. We can only hope that winter will bring them all back inside. However if another friendlier home appears it may be her Forever Home.........

Slightly emptier nest

Our Number two daughter has left home for University. The house is slightly emptier, but thanks to the other three being well and truly still at home the fridge is still emptying, the washing basket still filling rapidly and there is still a large pile of shoes at the front door.
Now we have two daughters forging ahead along their chosen career paths, the other two not far behind them. We are certainly entering a new phase in parenting.

Memory Lane

We visited the lovely suburb of Belmore last week- Grandma was born there and lived there until she was married. The old house still stands- a grand old dame, Federation style; owned by her father, the local baker. It is truly the best house on the street. Dad and his brothers (all in their 50's) remembered the front porch and the green tiles on the steps, and their grandma's Christmas puddings with sixpences baked in. Now Belmore is Italian/Greek, bursting with coffee shops full of old men, delicatessens selling olives, coffee beans and olive oil. We bought Greek cakes from the baker- cream puffs and a fruity slice. The coffee was dreamy.
We took the photos and a laptop to Grandma's when we visited her at the Retirement Home- she was thrilled to see the house in such good condition, and amazed at the technology too.

We had eight people for supper- a mix of vegetarians and the just plain hungry. Most of them under 20. Lasagna ticked all the boxes. Eight fitted easily around my new-ish kitchen table; no leftovers. Fruit salad for pudding. No leftovers there either. Lots of washing up.........

New eyes

We have some visitors staying from Hong Kong- friends of one of my daughters. They have visited some of the iconic beaches around town and all the usual sites- Opera House etc. Today we took them on a tour of the south Sydney beaches. The tide was very high and so was the surf- not good for a swim but made good photos. We stopped for coffee at Bronte, fish and chips at La Perouse and an ice cream at Clovelly Kiosk. It is good to see Sydney from another perspective.

Gazpacho!

It's hot, humid and the skies are dark. I don't feel like cooking, but the kids are beginning to circle the kitchen, prowling through the pantry. Check the fridge- we have sourdough, tomatoes and fresh herbs. I feel a Gazpacho coming on!
Chop 6 ripe tomatoes, one cucumber, a handful of olives, add a splash of olive oil, a dribble of balsamic, a handful of both parsley and mint, a little basil, a garlic clove or two.
Grind some black pepper to taste.
Grab the Bamix and whizz.
Pop in the fridge for an hour if you can wait that long.
Serve with warm sourdough and some plain yoghurt to plop on top. Add some ice cubes if it is a really hot day.

New Year's Resolutions

We do not usually try too hard with Resolutions. Most of them are fleeting attempts at self improvement. However this year we are moving into a very busy year so we are all trying to become good flatmates- of the house, of our community and our planet.
Stacking and emptying the dishwasher, cooking family meals, volunteering and supporting local charities, slashing our electricity bill, shortening showers.......watch this space to see how we get on.

Christmas is a time for Karma: thinking of other people for a change, loving relatives despite their foibles, giving thanks for their love and concern over the last year, watching some of that love flowing back towards you. All mixed up in the guise of eating, drinking and pressie exchanges. It must be fun because we keep coming back for more. This year was a particularly good one for us, with lots of visits from Aunts and Uncles, and a Special Guest Appearance by Grandma.

Alec turns 12!

My youngest child and only son turned 12 today. He spent the day with School friends at Camp, went to the beach for a brisk swim in the surf, then had dinner at his top choice Italian restaurant Bill and Tony's in Darlinghurst. Home for Nigella Lawson's Awesome Brownies as dessert. Then he asked for some antacids! Oh to be twelve again.

Home at Last

After 25 years away from Sydney we have finally returned- via Vietnam and Laos (more later...). Having left Australia with a couple of backpacks, we have re-entered with a 40 foot container, 4 kids, 3 cats and a large dog. We have moved in to a rambling house near the city, found places for the kids in Universities and schools, and a great Job for the MOTH. (Man of the House). The kids a enjoying discovering Sydney, and we are revisiting old haunts and friends, and delighting in new ones. Summer is here and life is good!

We are sadly leaving Hong Kong for good. We will not see our 'stuff' for several weeks. I am reminded that one can do with so very little- toothbrush, passport, a few clothes and a good book are all you really need.

Here in our house we have celebrated a lot of Big Milestones- two of them being a 16th and an 18th Birthday. Catie turned 18 in March, Helen 16 in May. In between we had two High School Graduations and two formal Balls.

I've finally bought myself a laptop!!!!!
I've worked a lot of extra hours as a childbirth teacher and stashed the money away. Once my bills had been paid there was enough left over for my very first, my very own laptop. No more shoving grumpy teenagers off the family computer, no more strange downloads clogging up the works- and if anyone so much as breathes near it they are in trouble- except when I need help!
So here are some photos I took last weekend in HK with my new-ish camera. I feel like a New Woman.

Alec's final season with his HK rugby club has come to an end. He was very proud to receive a Special Player Award last weekend for his achievements and commitment.

24 Hour Sail

Alec joined the sailing club team to sail for 24 hours for charity one weekend in October. All the kids took turn sailing all through the night, from 2pm Saturday to 2pm Sunday. Alec's shifts were 4-6 pm, 9-11 pm and 4-6 am. Tough going especially in the dead of night when the wind died off completely. However he saw the sunrise over the bay, ate a huge breakfast and stayed awake long enough to find his team had won by 4 seconds and collect the prize. We helped raise $30,000 which gave the team a real sense of purpose. Their average age was 9 years old- a great achievement for them all. Oh, yeah- the adult teams did well too!

5th Typhoon this season hits HK

We are battening down our hatches yet again as the 5th Typhoon this year passes by Hong Kong.
Schools are possibly remaining shut tomorrow, winds of 160 kph expected. Husband is stranded in Singapore as his 6pm flight is cancelled. We have homemade pizza on the menu followed by ice cream and Grey's Anatomy Season 4.

Long time no blog...I've been very busy and since we share two computers in a house of 7 people my time on it is rationed!
Anyway- I'm back at work and took this photo of my little office where I see all my 'patients'- primary school children from 4-11 years old. I love it and although it is very busy some days it is great fun. My son Alec is playing on my computer...you see I cannot even get to my work computer.
A laptop of my own is on my birthday list.

Junk season

The summer is moving in slowly to Hong Kong and it is Junk season again. This means renting a Junk made of teak along with a few friends chugging off to one of the islands dotted around HK island. We did this last Sunday. Alec was on this junk, I was on the next door one. We sailed for a short time to Turtle Beach. Turtles return there each year from June to October to lay eggs and the beach is closed. So we took a group picnic and BBQ, lots of wine and water, towels and cozzies. the kids had a ball jumping off the roof of the junk into the cool water. Parents took it in turns to supervise and relax. We were only a little sunburnt but very tired when we chugged home at 5 pm.

Rugby Sevens Hong Kong

Last weekend we spent about 28 hours watching the annual Rugby Sevens. The children play matches in the mornings, then the International teams play on a full sized field with seven players only, for seven minutes each half. It is a knock-out competition, fast and furious. Teams came from as far flung as Zimbabwe, Argentina, Tunisia and Wales. Two of my kids played- Alec in the U/10's and Catie in the U/19's. An exhausting but fun all-weekend long party! And the winners were....New Zealand, pictured after the fireworks doing the Haka.

Hello - Goodbye

We fostered a Jack Russell for two weeks. Sadly, he had epilepsy, but that could be dealt with easily with two pills a day, administered with great difficulty. He was generally a quiet little dog, and slept on the sofa (or tried to!). He was really happy, and loved walks, especially after living in a cage all his life. In the end, we managed to find a home for him. He is now living near Victoria Peak.

Mendelsson

Last weekend we were treated to a wonderful ballet exhibition by Helen's Ballet School.
Helen is in the senior class and the girls got to choose the style of costume- long, floaty, pale colours, Helen chose Juliet dresses.
Mendelsson went with it perfectly. The girls learn the Chechetti method which puts a lot of emphasis on delicate and expressive arm movements. Helen's arms are the longest I've ever seen and she looked beautiful on stage. She is the one in the middle at the front, kneeling on one knee.

Sunday Best

Sydney was host to three big cruise ships last weekend- the QE2, the QV and the slightly smaller Sea Princess.
It was too crowded to get very close to the famous old ladies but we were surprised on a family bush walk to see the rather surreal younger Princess steaming over to Darling Harbour. Sydney was in her Sunday Best- a fabulous day for picnics and walks.
I was very lucky to be there helping my 18 yr old settle into University, and managed to have a little R&R on Sunday.

Hiking on The Peak

The lovely cool brisk weather and a long string of public holidays made perfect timing for hiking in Hong Kong. We took the dogs up to Victoria Peak, about 2 1/2 steep kilometres, and had a lovely brunch at the Peak Lookout restaurant where dogs are actually welcomed with bones and water bowls.
We ate hot samosas and soup. Then we hiked 3 1/2 steep kilometres home- all down hill. We all slept well that night.

Golden Wall

We found this Wall of Gold in our supermarket which is decorated in red lanterns and boxes upon boxes of gold chocolates.
The Wall ran down the middle of the isle, boxes thick on both sides.
They are very more-ish, hazelnutty and bite-sized. Perfect for family gatherings and Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year has arrived with a bang and some very cold weather.
At school yesterday we celebrated with the High School up the road entertaining the Primary School with its very own Lion Dance.
It was noisy, colourful and fantastic fun!

Anniversary

This week would be the 59th wedding anniversary of our parents.
Unfortunately Dad died 19 years ago, but they had a long, happy, fruitful marriage!
I don't have any pictures here in HK of their wedding day, but here is a photo of the last time I saw Mum, along with several grandchildren. Maybe one of my other sibs has a photo they can upload- Helen??

Hong Kong- a city of contrasts

Alec took this photo while waiting for the bum boat to Middle Island Sailing Club. He then took an Optimist out with a crowd of kids and sailed to another island and had chocolate muffins and marshmallows melted over a fire. This was a very cold and windy day so the boats came back full of water!
I love this shot as the sampan chugs past the shiny motorboats (hardly ever get taken out) carrying another sailor to his day out.

Our oldest who is 18 has just been accepted into Syd Uni Law School- a whole new road has opened up.
We celebrated by opening a bottle of Aussie bubbly while she went out to play rugby, refusing even a sip in case it spoiled her game.

All my girls play rugby on the weekends. I love their dedication to the team and their feistiness on the field.

I don't like their injuries or the concussion!

However after the game when they are all around the kitchen table comparing stories and injuries and painting themselves with iodine it is all forgotten, and I revel in their shared sisterhood.

Change of Weather

This time of year in Hong Kong is always delightful.
After a long very humid hot and stormy summer the weather changes to cool nights, dry sunny days and clearer skies.
Walking up the hill to the bus is no longer a sweaty chore, sitting on the balcony in the afternoon is pleasantly breezy and warm, and hiking becomes the pastime of the week.
I have just returned from attending Year 5 and 6 Camps. Week One - Year 5- was spent up in a National Park where we hiked around the island of Tap Mun (Grass Island). We were rewarded with this stunning view looking out towards the east coast of the USA.
Week Two- Year 6 was spent on the island of Lantau, where we visited the Big Buddha. I loved this sign, displayed in the gardens around the Monastry, and will enlarge the photo to stick on my fridge at home.

This is our favorite photo of Isaac (the GR we rescued a few years ago from HKDR). He had his first 'photo shoot' yesterday as part of the HK Dog Rescue's Tribute Book to raise money for the current and future rescue dogs.

My Sailing!

Just last week, I went sailing at the ABC. There was a lot of wind, but it rained most of the time. That was o.k. because it's the monsoon! Anyway, mostly we sailed around bouys and did '8' and ∆. We learnt alot about beating, running, reaching, leward, windward, tacks, jibes, no-go-zone, port, starboard, ect, ect.

That's us playing 'sink the boat'- testing how many people can get into an optimist before it sinks.

That's me and the rest of the course participants sailing like ducklings in a pond.

And that's me, far, far ahead while the rest of the participants got towed by the speedboat back tto the slipway.

More Australian beaches

Helen's first appearance on the blog- this is Warriewood Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches. It was sunny but a stiff, cold Westerly wind was battering us. This was one of the most sheltered of all the beaches we visited that day.
The empty beach is Boomerang, up near Smith Lake on the coast of NSW. Much better weather up there.
It's all about beachcombing, reading newspapers, soaking up the sun, sketching, sandcastle building, picnics, fish and chips, Chumby Ball (a game invented by the kids- ask them for the rules....)

Beaches are for the Mind

We have just come back from a wonderful relaxing holiday in Thailand and Australia.
My favourite parts of it all were the moments with family and friends, and spending some valuable relaxing hours on the beaches of Sydney and Pacific Palms (near Forster.) Those beaches are so beautiful- I have loved them for years- and clean and fresh. They figure heavily in my meditation and relaxation moments (like lying in the dentists chair- I close my eyes and go straight to the beach).
Anyway, here is a sketch of a seashell found on Boomerang which will have to do until Catie and I put some holiday snaps onto the blog.
And for Kate: here are seven things about me- guess the untruth...
1. I have helped birth over 100 babies (only four of them mine)
2. I have helped several people die
3. I love thunderstorms
4. I am a whizz at parallel parking
5. I love playing golf (but not in a thunderstorm)
6. I sing off-key but insist on doing so in the car which scares my teenagers
7. I have an unhealthy (and expensive in HK) addiction to interior design magazines

Beautiful Hong Kong

Hong Kong is in the middle of the wet season but inbetween storms and downpours we get some fabulous days. It is as if the rain has washed us clean of the usual pollution and gives us a glimpse of what we might look like without all the particulates in the air from nearby factories and power stations.
Catie took this last Sunday in Kowloon looking over to Hong Kong island.

The beautiful Fleur...

As promised here is a picture of Fleur. We had to give her a bone to chew in order to keep her still enough to snap this picture.
She is elegant and intelligent, shares her kennel happily with any dog. I hope she is adopted soon.
My last favorite, Flicka, was adopted by a chef who had done some fundraising things for us. He came to see the kennels and left with Flicka. She had been there for nearly 12 months with no interested people. As Sally Andersen (our founder) says, there is a home for every dog if we wait long enough!

Rescue me!

This is Catie holding Rumble, a very cute B&W pup. He is the kennel mate of Fleur, who was too busy following Candice to sit and pose for photos! (We took a few but too blurred...)
Rumble will be adopted quickly as the B&W pups look so very sweet with their markings. They always have great personalities/good genes.

My 'real' job....

Every Friday evening from 4pm I head down to the Hong Kong Dog Rescue kennels.
As usual I am met by several dogs, all waiting for adoption, all gorgeous.
As one of the kennel supervisors I have to check if all the volunteers have arrived. These kids are aged between 14 and 18, and come to us regularly after a long school day. They spend two or three hours walking dogs, feeding, medicating, cleaning up, bathing, tick removing, training and visiting the vet. Dedicated dogs lovers they certainly are.
At any one time we have over 30 dogs with us, all saved from the local dog pound.
One of my long term favorites is Fleur, a mongrel, sort of Chinese Shepherd, with a brown coat and the big ears of a GSD.
She is the remaining puppy from a beautiful litter we rescued a few months ago. Very smart (she can get into any room by marvellous means) and gentle, she would make the perfect family dog. We know her Mum so her temperament is assured.
However, for whatever reason she is still with us. She is a friend of every dog, loves people and shadows Candice, one of our regular volunteers, everywhere.
Tomorrow night I'll take a photo for you.

About Us:
Annie's Lane is a family, a home, a lifestyle that is all ours.
Our family has six members, six pets and many friends.
Anne and Richard are the parents of four great kids-
Alec who is 9 and likes guitar, rugby, computers and fishing.
Helen is 14 and loves ballet, music, netball and friends.
Catie is 16 and has an affinity with animals, is good at creative writing and enjoys rugby, swimming, athletics and netball.
Julia is 18 and enjoys sport (hockey, rugby, netball, swimming and soccer) is academically brilliant and is off to university soon.

Pet parade: Lucy, our senior member, is a 14 year old collie, sensible and sweet natured.
Isaac (Newton) is 4, a goofy and cuddly Golden Retriever.
Spud (Einstein) is our foster dog, a curly coated mongrel with patchwork colours of brown, black, tan and white. He's about 1 year old.
Mozart is our slim grey tabby with jade green eyes. He has feline AIDS and is always nearby.
Gobbolino is large, chocolate brown and hungry. Very cuddly and likes to lie on your feet.
Tabby is, well, tabby and our 'spinster' cat- female, grumpy and tetchy, but loves to sit poised on Mum's knee hanging on with all claws.
